Background and purpose of Bees B:
Apart from Bees B, there is the Dutch decree on emission limits for combustion plants A (Bees A), intended for large systems, such as electricity plants, refineries and large chemical companies. Bees B applies to the other categories of systems. Bees A and Bees B include emission requirements for the emission of nitrogen oxides (NOx), sulphur dioxide (SO2) and dust from combustion systems. The decrees apply to boilers, gas turbine system(s) and piston engines. Bees A further applies to processing furnaces and coal-fired systems.
Bees A and Bees B aim at reducing the emission of SO2, NOx and dust as a result of the use of fuels. This is necessary, because these substances substantially contribute to the phenomenon of acid rain. The impact of the acid rain on the environment is still cause for great worry, not only in the Netherlands but in the rest of the industrialised world as well. In southern Scandinavia and in the east of North-America many lakes are dead. In western and central Europe the death of woods and the acidification of water, the corrosion of materials, irreplaceable works of art and monuments are of particular importance.
